About This Item

Edinburgh & London: T. N. Foulis, ltd. ,. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1922. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. In the original sage green, gilt embossed paper boards, with a plain green cloth spine. The gilt design is in the Art Nouveau style and MAYBE originally it was bright gilt - but all the copies I have ever seen are in this sort of dull gold, though it is marginally brighter on the rear cover filled with 'lions rampant'! . Generally the covers are very good but there are signs that the (plain) spine has been re-glued here and there - but all done pretty well. Page fore-edges white. Internally, all text/illustrations printed on great quality paper. VERY clean and bright. A gift note in old ink to the top of the title page. Unpaginated (c. 48 pp). Contains verse and prose from Ancient texts and by more 'modern' authors like Fiona MacLeod; Robert Louis Stevenson; Sebastian Evans; Sir Noel Paton; 'A. E'. (George Russell) ; Moira O'Neill, etc, etc. Each verse has most attractive Art Nouveau and Celtic style b/w illustration, and/or head or tail pieces, and decoration by various artists including Andrew Kay Womrath, James Cadenhead, Charles H. Mackie, John Duncan, and others. With some illustrated and calligraphic title letters in red. A Most Attractive book with a Celtic theme - though the 'Celtic' here is Scottish and Irish - Welsh seems to have been forgotten, although the Arthurian element is evident! . Lovely. See Images. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall .
