About This Item

"WINE - A Series of Notes on This Valuable Product and Subjects Suggested Therefrom, Together with Some Important References." Circa 1888 1st edition (there is no date of publication stated, but the author's Introduction is dated November, 1888); Simpkin, Marshall & Co.; London. Gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Smaller in size - the book measures 5 3/8" tall x 4 1/2" wide. There is an Index at the back. Here are some examples of the contents: Drinking Alcohol; Beer; Spirits; Strength of Champagne; Refined Taste; Anecdote of Whiskey; Bouquet; Burgundy; Carbonate of Lime; Foundation of Liquor; Molasses; Care of Vineyards; White Wine; Strength of Rum; Sherry; Distillation of Brandy; Icing Champagne; Manufacture of Cigars...and much more. Also included are two pamphlets titled "Extracts from Opinions of the Press" which include reviews of the book from various publications. (Both pamphlets are the same.)

From the Introduction: "The collection of jottings which I have brought together in the following pages I claim possesses this special merit - videlicet, that it concentrates a synopsis, including almost every point worthy of interest, and I trust may prove a textbook for reference in regard to imparting knowledge on many matters, and assisting the memory in others. Having continuously and practically, for nearly thirty years past, given my attention to the study of Wine, (during which period I have, as a careful and keen observer, resided in, or visited almost every country where the vine is grown or its produce consumed, thus embracing each phase from the grape to the decanter, and with an intimate knowledge of every market,) I submit for your perusal in a great measure the result of my own personal experience."

Condition:
The front cover has small, light stain spots at the bottom and right-hand edges; clean back cover and spine. Sharp cover corners. Bright gilt lettering on the front cover and spine; bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Tight binding with no cracks. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with the exception of some mild foxing to a few pages at the front (including the half title page, title page, the 2 Introduction pages, and page one. The front end paper has a small label remnant/outline at the top-right corner. Small bookshop label affixed to the rear pastedown. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
