Appletons' Journal was an American magazine of literature, science, and arts, published weekly by D. Appleton & Company from 1869-1876, then monthly until 1881. Winslow Homer (1836-1910) was an American landscape painter and commercial illustrator, considered one of the most elite painters of the nineteenth century and of American art in general.
John Karst (1836-1922) was a German-American engraver. He did engravings of many famous artists' work - such as Edwin Abbey and Frederick Edwin Church - for Harper's, Scribner's, and Leslie's magazines, and was best known for his illustrations in the six volumes of McGuffey's Readers, published 1879-1880.
