About This Item

Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press. Very Good. 2000. Softcover. 0826321933 . A 2000 softcover reprint edition of Michael Lesy's 1973 work, which tells the story of Black River Falls, Wisconsin and environs in the late 19th century through the photos of local photographer Charles Van Schaick, and from period news clips from local papers. The heavily wooded area was the site of logging activity and sawmills. Due to the harshness of life, especially during the cold winters, the people of the area suffered greatly from mental illness, crime and other ills, which were documented in the Van Schaick photos and clippings. With a preface by Warren Susman. --- In black wraps with representative photographic portrait to front panel. Unpaginated (about 150 pp.). --- A clean, tightly-bound copy but slight rubbing to covers.; Oblong Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; c.150 pp. pages .

Synopsis

First published in 1973, this remarkable book about life in a small, turn-of-the-century Wisconsin town has become a cult classic. Lesy has collected photos taken between 1890 and 1910 by a Black River Falls photographer, Charles Van Schaik, and juxtaposed them against newspaper accounts and state asylum and police records.
