A 2000 softcover reprint edition of Michael Lesy's 1973 work, which tells the story of Black River Falls, Wisconsin and environs in the late 19th century through the photos of local photographer Charles Van Schaick, and from period news clips from local papers. The heavily wooded area was the site of logging activity and sawmills. Due to the harshness of life, especially during the cold winters, the people of the area suffered greatly from mental illness, crime and other ills, which were documented in the Van Schaick photos and clippings.
