Lamb's essay on popular superstitions first appeared in the London Magazine, October 1821, and contains the ironies and felicitous turns of phrase characteristic of Lamb's prose. The title-page vignette is a reduced from a woodcut in the printer's possession attributed to Thomas Bewick. Charles Lamb was an English essayist and critic in the late 18th century and early 19th century and a major figure in English literary circles of the time.
