About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1981. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. Small stain on the topedge of the text not effecting the interior else fine in a fine dust jacket modestly tanned at the spine and top of the flaps. A sharp copy. Review copy with slip and author photo laid in. First printing in book form. Originally printed in *The New Yorker* in 1980, the first time the magazine dedicated its central section to one piece of writing. An indictment of how television destroyed America's sense of public culture and history, as well as how television marketing demographics have divided people based on age and arbitrarily assigned them characteristics that have replaced historical context. The essay has since become a touchstone among intellectuals and has been reprinted several times.
