About This Item
London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1896. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5". None. A first edition collection of essays by Jewish author-intellectual Israel Zangwill, which includes a range of meditations on travel and literature. First Edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding. This is a collection of essays, most of which were originally published in 'Pall Mall Magazine', written by Israel Zangwill. Contents are grouped under the headings 'Gossips and Fantasies', 'Here, There and Somewhere Else: Philosophic Excursions', and 'Afterthoughts: A Bundle of Brevities'. Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) was a British author who was at the forefront of the Zionist cultural movement of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He notably rejected the search for a Jewish homeland in Palestine, and instead became the primary thinker behind the Jewish Territorial Organization movement. One page of publisher's adverts to front of text. With an illustrated institutional bookplate to front pastedown. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Minimal bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of spine. Very light fading to the gilt on spine. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Institutional bookplate to front paste down, with light spotting and a few marks to the paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound, with binding loosening slightly towards middle of text. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with light age-toning to margins of text. Very Good
