From Intro: The first things that stride a visitor to Israel about its women is their erect walk, the absence of make-up, the fact that so many of them are pregnant, and that – in Tel Aviv at least -- their husbands apparently enjoy pushing the baby carriages dow Dizengoff Street. It does not take long to discover that man of these facts are interrelated.

The country is young. Girls under twenty years of age were, if native born, still in elementary school when the War of Liberation brought independence to Israel. Many of the women between twenty and thirty were shooting it out in the company of male soldiers and those over thirty were part and parcel of the struggle from before it even started.
