Secretary of the World Woman [sic] Christian Temperance Union....") and explanatory pencil notations. "Slack counted 'three of the most remarkable women that the nineteenth century produced' among her close friends - Francis Willard, Lady Henry Somerset and Rosalind, Countess of Carisle (President of the NBWTA and a great campaigner for women's suffrage). She conversed with many high-ranking officials during her lifetime, including American Presidents Cleveland, Roosevelt and Harding and Mahatma Gandi ... stood on the platform with distinguished speakers both titled and untitled and spoke in such disparate places as small village halls and large palaces. In this respect she undoubtedly helped pave the way for increased female participation in the public sphere." Women Past and Present: Biographic and Multidisciplinary Studies by Maria Zina Gonçalves de Abreu (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014).
