Illustrated throughout with photographs, including the frontispiece. Large folding map to the rear. Much rubbing to the covers, bumped corners. Foxing to the page edges as well as to much of the text. Endpapers also foxed. The map has an extra fold but is otherwise very good. Tight. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 288 pages .

The boards are shelf rubbed, edge worn and marked, with fraying to the edges and library markings to the spine. Despite this, the boards remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there are library plates, ink and stamp markings to the end papers and possibly scattered throughout the text, however the text is neat, legible and complete. The binding is secure. "I have attempted to weave into my writing something of the fascination and spell of Africa, which bred in the solitudes of open plain and primeval forest, grip the traveller from first to last" (vii). The author explored the region about Lake Kivu and between Kivu and Ruwenzori in the Congo with good description of the native peoples and nature and with some emphasis on gorillas, elephants, lions, entomology, cannibals, the volcanoes, etc. The appendix lists the new species of butterflies and moths collected by the author and his wife who accompanied him. Czech, Africa, p. 13: "Barns was joined by noted rifle maker Sir Charles Ross on an expedition leaving Mombasa in 1921. The party hunted lion and rhino near the Ngorongoro Crater, then traveled to the Lake Kivu region of the eastern Belgian Congo ... Included among the photos is a snapshot of a poacher named Bowen with an elephant he bagged sporting a pair of tusks at 173 and 176 lbs."
