The 6 wood engravings by Hermes are stunning to say the least and thought by many to be among her very best prints, and published here by arrangement with the NLW for the first time. (Esslemont Hughes 19) Hermes, Gertrude Anna Bertha, printmaker, sculptor, and designer, moved with her husband, in 1930 to Montgomeryshire, where Hughes-Stanton had been appointed wood-engraver to the Gregynog Press. The press also contracted Hermes to engrave for them, but their production was frustrated by her inability, through deep unhappiness, to complete wood-engravings for A Natural History of Selborne by Gilbert White, and the edition never appeared.
