Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1826. First edition. 12mo. 3 volumes: xvi, 315; (4), 332; (4), 370 pp. With the half-title to each volume. Historical novel set just after the English Civil War, featuring the escape of Charles II in 1652 and his triumphant return in 1660, published in the depths of the British banking crisis of 1826 during difficult financial days for Scott. CBEL III, p. 371. Spines sunned to a uniform brown, first signature in the first volume pulled, a little foxing, but a good solid copy. Contemporary olive half-calf (rubbed) and marbled boards (rubbed) and endpapers, gilt rules and leather labels on spine, all edges sprinkled red (faded). (#6373).
