Five volume complete set of the works of British essayist, poet and antiquarian Charles Lamb (1775-1834). Lamb was part of the circle that included such luminaries as Coleridge and Wordsworth and this set includes his correspondence with them and others. 422 pp, 429 pp, 519 pp, 444 pp, 437pp . Illustrated with b&w engraved frontis portrait. Plain green cloth binding with faded paper paste-down spine labels. Lightly rubbed and worn along exterior edges. Top edges gilt. Previous owner's gift inscription "Christmas 1884" in each volume. Frontis lightly foxed but text is clean and binding is secure. This is an original copy of the "new" edition published in 1884. Shaky binding due to cracked front hinges, with front free endpaper nearly detached. Pages are mildly tanned, but text remains clear. Mild foxing to endpapers. Moderate thumb-marking throughout. Noticeable water staining to some pages near front of textblock. Boards have heavy shelf-wear, with visible corner bumping and noticeable scuffing to edges. Spine is slightly creased, with visible crushing and moderate splitting to ends. Small water mark to front board. Heavy rubbing and scuffing overall, with various other noticeable marks.
