London: Downey & Company, Ltd., 1897 - 1899. COPYRIGHT EDITION, Limited to 1000 Sets. Complete in 37 volumes, which is standard for this edition. The Copyright Edition. Title pages are printed in red and black. With numerous etched plates by Phiz. 37 volumes is standard for The Copyright Edition and includes all of Lever's works. Bound in quality morocco leather bindings. Gilded spines. Raised hubs. The top edges are gilded. Printed on thick quality rag paper. Heavily illustrated with full page plates. Wide margins. Near free of foxing, but for the first few pages. Well over 65 inches of shelf space. VERY GOOD condition. The leather is very supple. The hinges are all strongly attached and sound. There is some general shelf wear and abrasion. This is an exceptional set. Anglo-Irish novelist Charles Lever was a famous Victorian author. He was the cause of Charles Dickens's prematurely publishing Great Expectations in All the Year Round because Lever's A Day's Ride was driving down sales of Dickens's weekly journal and only a serial by Dickens himself could salvage the situation. In fact, as Buchanan-Brown notes, Charles Lever was an exceedingly prolific writer who enjoyed a wide popularity in his own day, the pink covers opf the monthly parts of his novels rivaling the yellows of Thackeray and the greens of Dickens. He was an Irishman who wrote about his countrymen, and his readers thoroughly relished the wealth of incident with which his books were packed and the inexhaustible fund of stories with which they were filled. This set would make an excellent gift and/or addition to any fine library. In addition to their shelf presence, antiquarian books make an excellent investment. We always pack very securely to help ensure safe handling during transit. All books are individually wrapped and are always professionally padded. We offer a full refund guarantee, per our terms described on our site, with notification of such intent requested. Please contact us with any inquiries.

Description:
Set is damaged. Most covers are detached.THE COMPLETE WORKS OF CHARLES LEVER.
With an Introduction by Andrew Lang.Complete in 40 volumes.Numerous covers are detached.
Printed in 1894.Illustrated by the best Victorian illustrators. The covers are detached.
The spines have wear and chips and abrasions.
I don't want returns on this set.
Please do not purchase this unless you want it.The main condition issue is that many covers are detached. This might be of less significance if being used for display on a bookcase. This would be an incredibly expensive set, bound in full leather with extensive tooling and inlays, more affordable due to the detached covers. Still a nice antiquarian set that displays well where condition isn't critical. This set is complete.
In better condition, these books price at $250+ per volume which equals $10,000+ for this set. The covers are detached.
There is wear to the spines as clearly shown in the picture. Set has external damage to the bindings but is still attractive,… Read More
