Hardcovers in burgundy cloth, with title in gilt on front covers and spines. All volumes have moderate wear, including some heavy spotting (foxing) and rubbing. Some corners are bumped, some fore-edges are bumped. There is a dent in the spine (on the title) on Volume VI. All edges of text blocks are foxed, and the text has sporadic foxing. Interior is a bit musty. A sound set. Set includes the original receipt from Blackwell's in England, circa 1966.

Each volume is dated 1838 and is stated "Seconde Edition." Hardcovers bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards. All volumes rebacked with modern lighter brown leather (the original leather has chipping on the boards near the spines, but with the rebacks the bindings are sturdy and can withstand confident use). Each spine has a red leather title label and a small green leather Volume number label. There is moderate wear to the bindings, which is abraded in places. Rubbing and scuffing to the boards. Spines are sound and hinges are secure. The outer edge of the text block is speckled. Hardcover bound in later full green crushed polished morocco gilt by Worsfold. Raised bands on the spine. Leather turn-ins and stamped by Worsfold at the bottom of the front pastedown. Light rubbing and wear to the binding. The spine is faded to brown, and there is uneven fading to the green, especially at the top of the front cover. Top edge gilt. Contains a portrait frontis of Thomas More and a pictorial design on the title page, but this work was published with no other illustrations (the "Other Illustrations" from the title page refers to literary illustrations and not pictorial images). Lettering on the title page is in red and black. The text is a little toned but is still clean. An attractive copy.

First editions with the corrected slips pasted onto the copyright pages. Hardcovers bound in original brown half leather with brown marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt rules on the spines with black bands flat on the spine as well as gilt devices in the panels. The bindings are rubbed and bumped, but the bindings are strudy. Spines a bit dry, and spine ends are abraded or heavily rubbed. The fore edge of the board to Volume I has some pest damage affecting the bottom third of the front cover, right at the edge. The front pastedowns of each volume has a small early strip of paper pasted down with "Henry Lansing" printed on it.
