This is a collection of 4 volumes (of 16) from the very scarce "WORKS OF HERMAN MELVILLE" set - the first collection of Melville's works. The volumes are dated 1922 -1924 and were published by Constable and Company in London. Limited Edition of only 750 copies. Gilt top edge. Also included are original index card-sized order forms for other works by the publisher.
The collection includes the following works:
* THE PIAZZA TALES (including The Piazza, Bartleby, Benito Cereno, The Lightning-Rod Man, The Encantadas; or Enchanted Islands, and The Bell-Tower); 1923
* REDBURN - His First Voyage, Being the Sailor-Boy Confessions and Reminiscences of the Son of a Gentleman in the Merchant Service; 1922
* CLAREL - A Poem and Pilgrimage in The Holy Land, Volume I (of 2); 1924
* CLAREL - A Poem and Pilgrimage in The Holy Land, Volume II (of 2); 1924
Condition:
Overall the volumes are in very good condition with mostly clean, white pages. All volumes are tightly bound. Piazza Tales has a small bookshop label affixed to the front pastedown; fraying at the top edge of the spine; a few of the pages at the back of the book had been attached at the outer edge and in the process of separating the pages, small tears at the outer edge resulted. Redburn has stains at the outer page edges starting near the center of the book that continues to the end; crack between pages 320 and 321. Clarel Vol 2 has a thin, light stain across the center of the front cover; foxing to end papers only. A publisher's order card (see photos) had been left between pages 86 & 87 of Clarel Vol 1, leaving a light tanned area at the gutter; light foxing to front end papers and the last 2 pages of the book. Overall a very nice collection.
