Robert Boyle FRS (1627 – 1691) was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, physicist, and inventor. Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is best known for Boyle's law, which describes the inversely proportional relationship between the absolute pressure and volume of a gas, if the temperature is kept constant within a closed system. Among his works, The Sceptical Chymist is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry. He was a devout and pious Anglican and is noted for his writings in theology.
Although he was a contemporary of Isaac Newton and published many books during his lifetime, this 1744 set is the first edition of his collected works in English, and the only edition in full folio size (15" x 10").
The set [Fulton 240] is bound in full mottled calf with gilt titles and designs with raised bands on the spines and gilt ruling outlining the front covers of all volumes. Engraved frontispiece portrait in Vol. I, title pages in red and black. It has the complete 27 numbered plate illustrations called for in Fulton on 15 fold-out pages. Vol. V has a bumped upper front corner, and some hinges are cracked, but all volumes' bindings are still intact and generally sound, much better than average for such large and heavy (vols. are 6-8 lbs. each) books of this age. The front endpapers of Vol. V are loose but present. Text has some age darkening, primarily on endpapers, but all pages are clean and unmarked. Overall, all volumes are Good+ to Very Good.
The illustrations include:
Vol. I -- 2 plates on 1 foldout page
Vol. II -- 7 plates on 5 foldout pages
Vol. III -- 8 plates on 5 foldout pages
Vol. IV -- 6 plates on 3 foldout pages
Vol. V -- 1 plate on 1 foldout page

Provenance: At the time of publication, one would have had to have been nobility to have afforded such a large, expensively bound set as this. The armorial bookplate of Lord Sandys is affixed to the front pastedown of each volume. Samuel Sandys, 1st Baron Sandys PC (1695 –1770), was a British Whig politician who represented Worcester in the House of Commons from 1718 until 1743, when he was created Baron Sandys. He held numerous posts in the government of the United Kingdom, namely Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the House of Commons, Cofferer of the Household and First Lord of Trade.

Note: This large set is quite heavy. Shipment to any buyer outside the US will require additional shipping charges. Within the US, my policy of free shipping will still apply.

London: Printed for Henry Rhodes, next door to the Swan-Tavern, near Bride-Lane in Fleet Street, 1687. Early editont in English. 140. Very Good-. Considered one of the very earliest science fiction stories, The Comical History of the States and Empires of the World of the Moon was the first of three satirical novels written by Cyrano de Bergerac. It was originally published posthumously in 1657 and, along with its companion work The States and Empires of the Sun.  Arthur C. Clarke credited the book with the first description of rocket-powered spaceflight, and with the invention of the ramjet. The book is narrated in the first person by a character also named Cyrano. Cyrano attempts to reach the Moon to prove there is a civilization that sees the Earth as its own moon. He launches himself into the sky from Paris by strapping bottles of dew to his body, but lands back on Earth. Believing he had traveled straight up and down, he is confused by local soldiers who tell him he is not in France; they… Read More

Description:
1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPS

First and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"

The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

Description:
Complete 18 volume set, half leather with original boards and modern matching spines. 1824. Overall condition is very good. Recent fine binding using original boards. Old blanks are gone, this has new blanks. Only interior markings are pencilled numbers on back of title page. Some foxing in text, heavier in maps. Many pages uncut. 17 unpaginated maps and one plate of vocabulary. Set is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts. Where meaning is obscure he annotates generously. This was a major effort by a true scholar. The maps show a commensurate effort to create the best maps from the… Read More
