About This Item
Birmingham: Printed by John Baskerville, for J. and R. Tonson, 1761. 4 vols, 4to. pp. xxv, [ii], 537, [iii], 415-525 [=537, misnumbered, but 674 in total], [iv]; [viii], 538, [xii]; 579, [xi]; 555, [xi] + portrait frontispiece of Addison, engraved by John Miller after Godfrey Kneller, and three other plates engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; woodcuts of coins in vol. I, and with further cuts in vol. II included in the text. The curious collation in the first volumne is correct: presumably Baskerville commenced work on the work on Ancient Medals before completing the Haunted House or Poemata, and misjudged the pagination. Contemporary calf, rebacked in the 19th century, contrasting red and green labels renewed in the 20th; wear to joints and extremities, but sound and handsome. Engraved armorial bookplate of Alexander Blair to free endpaper; woodcut bookplate of F.A. Barrett by Cyril Goldie, c. 1900, to front pastedown. Gaskell, Baskerville, 17 Book
