Michael Drayton was a 16th-century English poet known for being one of the most popular poets of Elizabethan England. In 1748, over a hundred years after his death, the works of Drayton were published by Hughs in an impressive folio. This book features his historical poems such as 'Battle of Agincourt', and 'Miseries of Queen Margaret', as well as his lyrical works such as 'Polyolbion', 'The Moon Calf', and 'The Quest of Cynthia'.

While the individual owner of this bookplate is not identified, the coat of arms match that of the Corbet family, one of the most powerful and richest of the landed gentry in Shropshire. They trace their ancestry to two barons found in the 1086 Domesday Book and played a major part in the county's passage through the English Reformation and the English Civil War.
