Polished calf-leather hardcover (a later binding) with gilt lettering to spine; modest gilt decorations; four raised bands; outer edges of text block are marbled; brown mottled endpapers; red cloth inner hinges; foldout engraved frontispiece portrait of Pope (engraved by George Vertue); a few red letters on title page; 1717 on title page; reverse side of title page is blank; engraved headpieces and initial letters. Half-title; blank; frontispiece; title page; blank; 10-page preface; 15 pages of poetic admirations of Pope by various authors; blank; 2-page table of contents; then beginning with Pastorals: pages 1-435. Very good minus condition: wear/rubbing to edges of binding and outer joints with a little leather missing at corners; light scratches on boards; joints beginning to tear at top of spine, about 2" on the back and 1/2" on the front; marbling is dull/faded; hinges strong; endpapers in excellent condition; slight bleeding of the marbling paint to the edges of some of the front matter; frontispiece has a long tear with tape on the back side; a bit of curl to an edge; pages are in excellent condition. Will require extra for shipping..
