About This Item

Edinburgh: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1813. Hardcover. Good +. 4 volumes (complete), octavo size, 1775 total pp. A cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world, Robert Burns (1759-1796) is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement; his poetry is known for using the Scots language, as well as a light Scots dialect and English. His work is celebrated for its language and lyricism, and perhaps his best known poem is "Auld Lang Syne", set to the tune of a traditional Scottish folk song; many of his poems were influenced by his work as a farmer and the natural world, such as "To a Mouse" and "Tam o' Shanter".

This four-volume set, the seventh edition, not only contains Burns' poems, but also a thorough biography of his life, accompanied by numerous letters he wrote, and a critical analysis of his writings, to form a scholarly examination of one of Scotland's greatest poets.

___DESCRIPTION: Half tan leather with blue marbled paper boards, gilt rules and tan decorative pattern on the spines, brown leather spine labels with gilt lettering, all edges stained brown, blue, red, and yellow marbled endpapers, each title page with a different black-and-white illustration; octavo size (8.5" by 5.5"), pagination: Volume 1: [i-v] vi-ix [x] xi-xii [1] 2-395; Volume 2: [i-v] vi-viii [ix] x-xxiv [1] 2-470; Volume 3: [i-v] vi-xii [1] 2-422; Volume 4: [i-v] vi-xxiv [1] 2-414 [415-416].

___CONDITION: Volumes are very good overall, with strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, entirely free of prior owner markings; we are grading as good plus due to the following condition issues, mostly to the binding: the covers are clean overall but with minor soiling, all volumes with rubbing to the edges and corners, with all corners gently bumped, marbled paper is beginning to lift at the bottom right corners of volumes 1 and 4, a few pages creased and minor foxing to a few of the interior pages in each volume, but interior pages are clean overall. All volumes have shallow ripples to the interior pages, we presume from the way the paper dried (there is no evidence of dampstaining).

___POSTAGE:  Please note that due to the weight of this set additional postage may apply; please inquire for details.
