Description:
A very good copy of a scarce edition of the Dance of Death.Complete with handcoloured woodcut frontispiece and 10 other woodcuts by an unknown artist (perhaps Wenceslaus Hollar). One of "400 copies plain" from an edition of 460 (60 copies were issued with handcolour). The 11 subjects are: The Count (handcoloured), The Pope Crowning an Emperor, Emperor, Empress, Queen, Bishop, Abbess, Canoness, Soldier, Physician and Preacher. According to the author, "the blocks illustrating this work are a series found in a northern printing office many years ago. They seem to be of considerable age." Elsewhere, he identifies the owner to be Joseph Temple, a Hull printer and newspaper publisher. According to the exhaustive Dance of Death website dodedans.com, the woodcuts here follow the 1816 re-issue of Wenceslaus Hollar's reworking of Arnold Birckmann's copies of Holbein's woodcuts. The engravings lack any artist's initials or signatures.Thomas Tindall Wildridge (1858-1928) was a librarian, antiquarian, artist and… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."

Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769¬1830) was the most gifted and successful British portrait painter in the generation following Gainsborough and Reynolds, and his pre-eminence was confirmed by his election as President of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1820. Yet Lawrence¬"s work has often been dismissed as flashy and meretricious. This beautifully illustrated, eloquently written, and comprehensive account reverses that view, demonstrating that Lawrence was an intelligent, hard-working, and profoundly conscientious artist. The book is the first sustained study of Lawrence¬"s work in many years, and the first ever to look closely at his highly accomplished drawings as well as his paintings. Tracing the steps in his career, Michael Levey analyses and… Read More

Description:
This is a very lovely small book of poetry by Dante Gabriel Rossetti with illustrations by Paul Woodroffe. It was published by David McKay, Philadelphia, and dates to circa 1916. This appears to be a special binding, more luxurious than the softcover binding that McKay published, because this one has covers of thick rose-colored suede leather with the title and author impressed deeply into the suede on the front cover and spine. The illustrations are in the Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau style. The page edges are gilt, as shown, and there is a pink ribbon bookmark sewn in. The interiors are in good, clean condition; the only condition… Read More
