London: The Gresham Publishing Company, 1906-7 New edition of The Henry Irving Shakespeare, complete in 14 uniform volumes. This edition includes for the first time an appreciation of Irving by Bram Stoker in the first volume. The volumes were issued at monthly intervals ( the entire set had to be ordered). HB. Dark green cloth, lettered in gilt to spines and front, with attractive gilt and light green decorative foliage motifs to spine and front in art nouveau style. 23 x 17cm. The texts are based largely on the First Folio. Each volume has a colour plate frontispiece reproducing a painting of one of the plays in the volume by recent or contemporary British artists (eg Maclise, Holman Hunt, Millais, Poynter, Charles Leslie). Each volume also has many line illustrations in plates and the text. Volume I has Stoker's appreciation of Irving, and a life of Shakespeare as well as a general introduction. Each play has an introduction and extensive notes by the editors. Poems such as Venus and Adonis and the Sonnets are included. The last volume has a section on Shakespeare's Stratford and Warwickshire by W.Jerome Harrison, illustrated with b&w photos. A Very Good set, uninscribed, and the text unmarked, generally clean and well-bound. Bright covers, a few volumes have rubbing to cloth of main boards with patchy fading, but the spines are bright and unrubbed. Most of the pages are clean and unfoxed, though with occasional light browning to the margins; there is browning to the endpapers and foxing to leaves at the ends, mostly light but in one or two volumes it is heavier; also some foxing to the closed edges generally. Overall a handsome and well-edited set. Please note a Very heavy set which will require extra postage.
