About This Item
New York: Merrill & Baker, [c. 1890-1897]. Loose_leaf. Very Good. 7 3/8 x 10 3/8 inches. Full page map colored in red and blue. Very lightly toned. Evidence of binding along left (inner) margin. A very nice map, originally appearing in one of the "History Series" By Mary Elise Thalheimer, and early female American historian and hymn writer. . John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900) was an American educator, historian and editor. He was a descendant (through his mother) of Samuel Matthews, a colonial governor of Virginia. In 1869, he was elected Professor of English Literature at Asbury College, where he served as faculty member and later vice-president, and was largely the originator of the measures by which that institution was placed under the patronage of Washington C. DePauw, from which it takes its current name (DePauw University). His volumes of history were popular and reissued many times by Merrill & Baker (1890-1897) and The Jones Brothers Publishing Co. (Cincinnati, Ohio 1914-1916) and sold by subscription.
