About This Item

San Francisco: The Lehner and Sefert Publishing Company, 1915. Quarto (28.5 x 20.5 cm.), [7], 8-144, [1] pages. Illustrated throughout. Color illustrated second title. Advertisments. [WITH:] Three menus featured in the book, including: Banquet du Congress Hoteliers des Alpes. Lyon, 1905 (printed on silk); Menu from the Savoy Hotel, Cairo, 1903 (similar to the Kitchener Banquet menu page 79); Bill of Fare from the Grand Hotel Yokohama, 1904 (slightly variant design beautifully printed in chromolithograph). FIRST EDITION, stated "Gold Medal Edition De Luxe" on the front panel of the binding, and with a handwritten "No. 1575" of an unspecified edition to the front pastedown. Signed by the author beneath the frontispiece portrait. A souvenir of the exhibition of the important menu collection of J.C. Lehr, "The American Gastronom [sic]" exhibited at the Portola-Louvre during the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. Much of the volume is taken up with reproductions of the menus exhibited, while the later part is a collection of menus aimed at "persons, private and professional, engaged in practical cooking and service" (the author's introduction). Advertisements at the rear include a two-page promotion of General Electric, itself an exhibitor at the Expo, with a full-page description of the Electrical Dinner given by GE Messrs. Ford and Edison and featuring dishes by Lehner. Lehner seems to have had a finger in everything, as at the rear there is an advertisement for his Museum of Cookery and Gastronomy, located in San Francisco's Hotel Senate, which housed both the Menu Gallery and a Cook Book Library, and which offered "culinary demonstrations of cooking by electricity" using colored lantern slides. Publisher's green cloth, gilt-titled to front panel; slight rubbing to edges and corners a bit bumped. Generally very good. One menu has small adhesion marks to rear panel, otherwise very good to fine. The front paste down bears an added chromolithograph illustration cut in the shape of a bottle of "Golden State California Champagne"; laid-in without explanation are labels for "Lachman Co. San Francisco Riesling", and "A.A. Ferreira Selected Very Old Port"
