Binding is a trifle silverfished at the edges and there is some light staining to the bottom inch of the front board; internally a clean copy with all of Henderson's illustrations present as called for; dust jacket is heavily chipped with loss; top of the front flap has been clipped, but the price on the bottom of the flap is intact. Originally issued by Jonathan Cape in 1922, this is a presentable copy of the First American edition, uncommon in the jacket. Bleiler offers noteworthy praise, "there are a wealth of wonderful personalities, most imaginative incidents, and a unique richness of language. Eddison modelled [sic] his tongue on Tudor and Jacobean English and brought the feat off, with a treasury of image that is almost unbelievable. His work ranks along with Beddoe's as one of the best language-pastiches in English. . . . Still the finest heroic fantasy" (Bleiler 597).
