About This Item
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1997. First Edition. Octavo. (20cm. x 14 cm.) [ix-xxiii] 260 pp. Photo-illustrated dust jacket. Half-cloth, wheat colored paper boards, spine in red cloth, titles in gold. Fine. Writer bell hooks' "Wounds of Passion" is a tribute to her life as an author, feminist and social activist. From an early age, hooks realized that although she was expected, as a mid-century woman of color, to be a traditional wife and mother, she could, instead, choose a life of the mind. In this moving memoir, bell hooks recalls the moments that firmed her resolve to live and read and write as she chose. Influenced in her youth by like-minded writers and poets such as Langston Hughes and William Wordsworth, bell hooks championed the socially active writing and critical reading style that remains influential in literature classes today. In 2014, her home state of Kentucky honored her with the founding of the bell hooks Institute at Berea College, the first interracial and coeducational college in the South.
