Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, (1893). Walden Edition. Hardcover. Large, personal bookplate on each front pastedown; minor spots of rubbing. Near Fine and attractive on the shelf. Ten 5" x 7-3/4" volumes bound in publisher's 3/4 green morocco leather and marbled boards with heavy gilt spine decoration and lettering, top edges gilt. Illustrated with portraits of Thoreau and photogravures by Herbert Gleason of scenes and objects described in the works. This Walden edition, an early but not first printing, is based on the Riverside edition of 1893 and printed from the same plates as the Manuscript Edition. It was first published in six volumes without the JOURNALS which were added later. This set has the first four of the fourteen volumes of the JOURNALS and all of Thoreau's published work.
