Description:
1848 Mississippi Exploration Indian Wars Color MAP Western Americana Monette

'History of the discovery and settlement of the valley of the Mississippi' is the history of the Americas along and around the Mississippi river. It is told primarily from the perspective of the Indian Wars between Native Americans and France, Spain, and Great Britain.
"The first volume is principally occupied with a relation of the French and Spanish discovery of the territory, and the association of the colonial governments of these nations with the Indians, and their wars with the various tribes inhabiting it. Much of the larger portion of Vol. II. is devoted to a narration of the Indian wars of the States bordering the Ohio. The work is probably the best of the numerous class of books on the subject of western history" (Field).

This 1848 edition includes:
·
First Spanish discoveries in Florida 1512 to 1538 --
·
Exploration of the Mississippi River by La Salle: his colony on the Colorado 1673 to 1696 -… Read More

1845 Davy Crockett TEXAS Battle of the Alamo INDIANS Mexico Creek War America 2v

"I know, that obscure as I am, my name is making a considerable deal of fuss in the world."
― Davy Crockett
Davy Crockett has long been one of the most iconic American folk heroes. While his legend has grown immensely since his military and political adventures, he did make an impact on the shape of the United States in the 19th-century.
In 1834, prior to the Texas Revolution, Crockett began writing his autobiography, now known as 'Narrative of the Life of David Crockett'. This work provides a full and complete discourse of his journey through Tennessee all the way to Texas into San Antonio. It also gives insight to the military and political engagements of Crockett but focuses heavily on his wars with Native Americans and Mexicans, particularly the Creek War, Texas War, and the Battle of the Alamo.
Crockett's 'Narrative' was published throughout the 19th-century including this 1845 two-volume edition. This particular… Read More

Description:
1824 ARCTIC Voyage 1ed William Parry North Pole Eskimos Polar Exploration MAPS

An exceedingly rare and valuable 1824 edition of William Parry's personal account from his second voyage to the Northwest Passage. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

This work includes 38 impressive, engraved maps and illustrations after the sketches of Captain Lyon, many of which illustrated the domestic lives of Eskimos. It also includes a vocabulary of the Eskimo language. Note what these references say of this work.

Description:
London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1886. First edition. Full leather. This first edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped is finely bound in full oxblood calf. The binding features raised spine bands, double gilt-rule framed and gilt-tooled compartments, twin black spine title and author labels, gilt rule-bordered covers, red and green silk head and tailbands, and marbled endpapers. Condition of the binding is near fine – square, tight, clean, the calf unfaded and supple with only trivial superficial scuffs. The contents are suited to the binding, notably clean with the color folding map present and intact at the title page and the publisher’s advertisements following the text retained when the volume was bound. The contents appear to be a mixed issue of the first edition. The text appears consonant with first issue; in line 11 of p.40, “business” is uncorrected. However, the advertisements following the text are dated 5G-7.86. Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish author… Read More
