Original black cloth. 23.5 x 16 cm. Lettering on spine and cover rubbed, some light soiling to covers. Stain to fore-edge not affecting the surface of leaves. Light to moderate foxing of plates and facing pages, including the title. Good only. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY POWELL, on the half-title. It reads: "For Miss Tempie -- whose enthusiasm is an inspiration. Bill Powell, Nov. 10, 1958." The recipient was Tempie Harris Prince of High Rock Farm, Rockingham County, North Carolina, whose bookplate appears on the front pastedown. Also included is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY SADIE SCOTT KELLAM to Harris, tipped onto the verso of the front free endpaper. In the letter, dated 1959, Kellam thanks Tempie for sending her a copy of this book. Kellam was the author, with her husband Vernon Hope Kellam, of "Old Houses in Princess Anne Virginia" (1931). William Stevens Powell (1919-2015) was a prominent North Carolina historian and the author of several standard references on the Tarheel state, including the "Encyclopedia of North Carolina," "The North Carolina Gazetteer," and "The Dictionary of North Carolina Biography.
