About This Item
New York: Harrison Smith, 1932. First edition. Very good.. Red cloth, stamped in gilt. Ownership inscription, dated the year of publication, of her future publisher James Laughlin [New Directions] on first free endsheet. Spine faded, else very good, lacking the jacket.
First edition. Boyle's second novel, dedicated to the Italian-American poet Emanuel Carnevali. In New York in 1922 she met and married a French exchange student, Richard Brault, moving to France in 1923. She separated from her husband and met magazine editor Ernest Walsh, with whom she had a relationship and a daughter, Sharon, named for the flowering shrub "Rose of Sharon." Sharon was born in March of 1927, five months after Walsh's death from tuberculosis in October of the previous year. YEAR BEFORE LAST has been presumed to be a memorial to Walsh.
