About This Item

London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 1894. Hardcover. Very Good. A complete set of 13 volumes. Square octavos. Later issue, without advertisements at the back. In the original yellow pictorial cloth stamped in black, with cover designs by Aubrey Beardsley (Vols. 1-4), Ethel Reed, and Mabel Syrett.

One of the most important periodicals of the nineties, with contributions by Henry James, Max Beerbohm, Kenneth Grahame, H. G. Wells, W. B. Yeats, George Gissing, and others; and with numerous illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley, Walter Sickert, William Rothenstein and several other important artists. The Yellow Book is also notable for the inclusion of work by women writers and illustrators, among them George Egerton (Mary Chavelita Dunn), Charlotte Mew, Rosamund Marriott Watson, Ada Leverson, Ethel Reed, Mabel Syrett, and Nellie Syrett.

An attractive, very good set from the library of Richard R. Deupree (Chairman of the Board of Procter & Gamble), with his bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. Most volumes are rubbed and have modestly toned spines, and some scattered foxing. A detailed list of all 13 volumes, which includes all of Aubrey Beardsley's contributions, is available.
