With a useful alphabetically-organized "Index of Authorities" with page number citations at back. John Gamgee (1831-1894) presents his theories on epidemic disease and specifically Yellow Fever and its relation to nautical transmission, concentrating on the conditions in shipping, ports, tropical influences and other aspects of this plague: "...ships obviously or latently infected, by sojourn in these ocean limits (tropics) contaminate the ocean harbors chiefly and often, but less often the seaport towns themselves. These harbors and seaports cherish and retain the infection in direct relation to prevalent heat and moisture, hence to latitude...The number, age, and character of ships in harbor, the source and cleanliness or impurity of the said ships, the character of trade or purpose for which the shipping is used...materially influence the severity, extent, and duration of an outbreak..." (from one of the Conclusions of his finishing argument) Approx. 6" x 9" size; bound in the original dark plum textured cloth, gilt spine titles.
