Original hand-coloured engraving (23.5 x 14.5 cm) from the first British edition of Elements of Botany: Or, Outlines of the Natural History of Vegetables. The first edition, printed for the author in Philadelphia in the previous year, is the first botanical textbook to have been published in America. Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) was an American botanist, naturalist, and physician. He was one of the first professors of natural history in the United States and built the largest collection of botanical specimens in the country. He wrote the first American textbook on botany.
