"Yellowstone" earned his nickname while scouting for the Army on the Yellowstone River; from 1876 to 1878 he was Chief of Scouts for Lieutenant-General Nelson Miles who penned the Foreword. Kelly later guided two expeditions into Alaska, served as the Captain of Volunteers in the Philippines and then took on a post as agent of the San Carlos Indian Reservation. It is said he was as as likely to quote Shakespeare as skin a beaver. His stoies of hunting, scouting and frontier warefare are certainly well narrated.
