About This Item

Norwich, New York: Private Printing. Very Good. 1939. Limited/Numbered Signed Edition. Hardcover. Some splay to the front cover and a slight roll to the spine. The title label was applied at a slight angle. The glassine wrapper has a couple of nicks. The box is darkened with wear to the extremities.; In 1897, young Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the New-York Sun newspaper. "I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?" The letter was handed to Francis Church, a cynical and sardonic Sun writer, who rose to the challenge and in 423 words crafted a kind response that struck into the souls of readers, then and now. Church cast Santa Claus as someone who didn't need to be seen to be proven, but as a supernatural manifestation of love, generosity, beauty, and faith it what is good. "Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding." This copy was privately printed as a Christmas keepsake for the friends of Alice "al" Coulter of Norwich, New York. Copy 47 of a limited edition of 100. From the colophon: "This edition has been printed / in an edition limited to 100 copies / for the friends of / Alice Coulter / of which this is / number 47 / al" with "47" and signed with the author's shortened first name "al" in ink. Unpaginated, but 7 pages. Printed in a "Gothic" font on laid paper with a double rule printed in red above the tail edge. The text block is trimmed at the head and tail, with the fore edge deckled. The book is 5" x 3 1/2" and bound in medium-yellow, laid paper over boards. Paper title label to the front has the title in a double-ruled frame, below the title is a printer's device of a pepper printed in red, the device also in red on the title page. The book is in its original glassine wrapper with impressed, vertical, hashed columns. Housed in the original 2-piece gift box covered with diamond patterned paper on the outer half. Only 2 copies found in OCLC, with this and other limited editions scarce in the market. This little book is in clean, sharp, attractive Very Good condition.; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 7 pages .
