About This Item
First, only edition. Hardcover: black boards with illustrated dust jacket in protective mylar cover with green endpapers, illustrated throughout in black-and-white, unpaginated [120 pp], 8.25 x 8.5 inches, text in Japanese and English. ISBN 03720210080049. Slight foxing to first and last pages, and rear endpaper, else fine.
Yohko was published 2 years after Fukase's divorce, and is as much about loss as about the joys of life. For over 13 years, Fukase photographed his wife excessively. Yohko herself described their life together as "suffocating dullness interspersed by violent and near suicidal flashes of excitement." The narrative of the images is a collaboration between photographer and model, with Yohko, complicit and often posing for the camera. Eight years later, in 1986, Fukase would publish his iconic book, Ravens. Several of the earlier images here also appear in Ravens.
