Along the Grand River there is a small hamlet, York, where some homes are being restored and many new homes are being built From 1861 until recently, York was at a standstill, with very few changes taking place. Over the years the early families have scattered. Before 1861 however, York was a thriving village wiht three stores, a two-roomed schoolhouse, two churches, each with large congregations, three or more hotels, water powered mills, blacksmith ships, carriage shops, and a large shoemaker shop. It was a busy commercial center, the hub of a thriving lumbering, agricultural and gypsum mining community. Anyone who is interested in researching the early history of York and its residents will receive much assistance from reading this well documented book. Prior to its publication, little was known of its entrepreneurs and families before 1861. This book reveals the talents of Joh Quinsey, a retired land surveyor, as a researcher and writer.
