About This Item

New York: Julius Bien (Oakland: Octavo), 1868; 2003. 1st edition. Other Binding. New/No Jacket (as issued). Digital facsimile (in electronic PDF format on CD-ROM disc; not a printed book) of the 1868 first edition of this landmark of nature photography and conservation. California State Geologist Josiah Dwight Whitney created this lavish publication, issued in an edition of only 250 copies, as part of his campaign to preserve the area that later became Yosemite National Park. Photographer Carleton Watkins contributed albumen-print photographs, actual prints of which were mounted into each copy. The book also features two large- scale foldout maps by Charles Hoffmann and others. This Octavo Edition contains detailed digital images of every page of the original book, as well as optimized viewing images of the plates and maps and supplementary materials including an introductory essay, extra maps (some never before published), a provenance essay and detailed bibliographical information. Unsold original stock, minor storage wear.

Terms of Sale

Philip Smith, Bookseller

Payment in full by Visa/MC, cash, check, money order, or Amex/Discover (processed by Biblio) with order. Books can be held up to 10 days upon request; email is the preferred (and quickest) means of communication. Postage is extra: orders through Biblio are charged at their prevailing rates; otherwise, postage cost will be quoted upon request (optional insurance is extra at cost). All items are graded conservatively using consistent standards: generally speaking, 'Fine' is the best condition class, followed by 'Very Good', 'Good', 'Fair', and 'Poor' (these can be considered as analogous to letter grades A, B, C, D, F: the latter two classes are rarely offered). Please inquire if you have any questions about the condition of an item listed. Any purchase may be returned for refund if deemed unsatisfactory upon receipt. I will be glad to ship with invoice to academic institutions in advance of payment if a purchase order is provided. Dealers may inquire for reciprocal trade discount. California shipments subject to an additional 9.25% sales tax.
