Very good (moderate edgewear; moderate darkening/sunning, spine; few stains, rear cover, largest 3/4 inch in greatest dimension; moderate dulling of gilt, top edge; previous owner's signatures, endpapers, one dated October 13, 1910; modest browning of pages). Still attractive, despite these defects. Off-white cloth-covered boards, 7 1/2 x 5 1/8 inches, 214 pp. (including advertisements at rear), index, 16 b/w illustrations. No dustcover. "From the diary of an English lad (a protege of the duchess of the fifth Duke of Marlborough) who served in the British frigate Macedonian during her memorable action with the American frigate United States; who afterward deserted and entered the American Navy, was recaptured by the British and confined in a South African prison and, on being released, again enlisted in the United States Navy."
