New York: American Tract Society, 1832. Book. Fair. Cloth. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Presumed first edition. 16mo. 228 p. Illustrated with woodcut engravings. Gallaudet was the principle of the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, the oldest such school in the United States. His son Edward Miner Gallaudet, co-founded the first college for deaf students, Gallaudet University. This little book includes an interesting mix of natural history, scientific, and theological discussions, written for young people. Includes an engraving depicting the sign language alphabet. Boards worn and corners trimmed; leather spine split. Last 20 pages loose, and last several pages missing (was originally 231 pages). Fair..
