Zadig and Other Romances

by Voltaire; Woolf, H.I and Jackson, Wilfrid S. (translators)

Condition: Near Fine

London: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, 1926. First Edition. Leather. Near Fine. Keen, Henry. First edition with Henry Keen illustrations, octavo size, 316 pp. First edition of this work with illustrations by Henry Weston Keen (1899-1935), who only illustrated a handful of books before dying of tuberculosis at a young age. His "vivid and imaginative drawings are quite bizarre and show the influence of Sidney Sime and Beardsley" (Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). We prefer to call his illustrations stunning, magical, and somewhat surrealist - in any event they are not to be missed. In addition to creating the full-page illustrations, Henry Keen also often created special endpapers and chapter headings for his books, presenting us with the book as a true work of art. In a custom binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London. ___DESCRIPTION: Crimson leather binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London, with a decorative ruled border and letting on the front in gilt, green spine labels with gilt lettering, spine richly decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, red, black and gold marbled endpapers, title page in red and black, Introduction capital letter in red, crimson ribbon marker. ___CONDITION: Near fine overall with a square, strong text block, solid hinges, clean and bright inside, and free of prior owner markings; light rubbing to the corners and tail of the spine, also to one of the spine ribs, and some sunning to the spine; even with these few faults in the binding, spectacular in every other respect, a wonderful example of Keen's work. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
