About This Item
Headline, London, 1998. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Illustrated. acknowledgements, art credits and index. Map illustrated endpapers showing northern part of Africa and Europe in the early part of the 19th century. The text is illustrated with black-and-white contemporary illustrations. Brown coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. In 1826 a young Giraffe, named Zarafa, landed in the port of Marseilles. She was a gift from Mohammed Ali, Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt, to King Charles X, to (hopefully) stop any interference from France in his war against the Greeks. Zarafa became an adored celebrity in her own right, and this book tells of her stately walk from Marseilles to Paris and of the life she led, poetry and fashions inspired by this visitor from Africa. Minor rubbing to the book corners and backstrip edges. A hint of ruffling to the dustwrapper edges, and rubbing to the dustwrapper panels. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 215, [1] pages,. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Illustrated. Quantity Available: 1.
