Mayr in The Growth of Biological Thought writes "Nothing in the cytological advances made before and after 1900 was more important in the history of genetics than the demonstration of the individuality and continuity of chromosomes...[p.747] There is no doubt that Boveri, more than anyone else, supplied the decisive proof for the theory chromosome individuality." [p. 748] Henry Harris [The Birth of the Cell] adds that Boveri's "..experiments marked a major transition in methodology. Prior to Boveri, analysis of cellular components was based either on theory, as in the case of Weisman, or on minute microscopic examination of selected cells and tissues, as in the case of Flemming. With Boveri the science of cell biology moved from observation and deduction to manipulative experimentadon. p. 170" Baltzer [Theodor Boveri: The Life of a Great Biologist 1862-1915] describes Heft 6 as the "final, extremely comprehensive report of the decisive experiments carried out by Boveri the winter of 1901-1902 and in the spring of 1905." .
