Boston: Keileivio Spauda ir Lesomis, 1914. First Thus. First edition in Lithuanian. Originally published in Germany in 1912 as Menschenschlachthaus; an English translation appeared in 1913 as The Human Slaughter-House: Scenes from the War that is Sure to Come. 12mo ( 7-3/4"). Staple-bound, pictorial thick paper wrappers; 53pp. External rubbing and soil; text fresh and unmarked; Very Good. A near-future war dystopia, predicting with uncanny accuracy the unprecedented carnage and suffering of the First World War. Lamszus (1881-1965) was a progressive educator, pacifist and socialist; Menschenschlachthaus, his first separately-published work, became a publishing sensation and established Lamszus' reputation, but it also gained him many enemies on the right. He would be deprived of his teaching position following the Nazis' solidification of power in 1933, but continued to publish surreptitiously under the pseudonym "Paul Willis." BLEILER (Checklist 1972) p.174 (the London edition). This edition, published by the Lithuanian-American socialist publisher "Keileivis" ("The Traveller") is unrecorded in OCLC.
