Originally published in Germany in 1912 as Menschenschlachthaus; an English translation appeared in 1913 as The Human Slaughter-House: Scenes from the War that is Sure to Come. 12mo ( 7-3/4"). A near-future war dystopia, predicting with uncanny accuracy the unprecedented carnage and suffering of the First World War. Lamszus (1881-1965) was a progressive educator, pacifist and socialist; Menschenschlachthaus, his first separately-published work, became a publishing sensation and established Lamszus' reputation, but it also gained him many enemies on the right. He would be deprived of his teaching position following the Nazis' solidification of power in 1933, but continued to publish surreptitiously under the pseudonym "Paul Willis."
