About This Item

Philadelphia and London: J. B. Lippincott. Good with no dust jacket; Library bookplate and several other stamps and . markings.. 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Navy cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine. Index of authors, index of subjects. Wheeler postulated that a rising layer of "planetesimal dust" rose from the Earth around its middle, like the rings of Saturn, and thermally blanketed the equatorial regions and kept them from freezing over during the Ice Ages. As a contemporary reviewer in Vol. 41 of The Bulletin of the American Geological Society noted, the book is largely full of the author's theoretical suppositions, quotations from other authors and retelling of folklore and myth, so that "such a work can hardly be called an important contribution to the literature concerning the causes of glacial periods....the theories here advanced are so highly speculative that they do not appeal to us. We prefer to be surer of the geological facts concerning ice ages, before we spend too much time trying to explain." ; Ex-Library; 401 pages .
