Hardcover. Translated and with an introduction by Hugh Elliot. Green ruled cloth. Titles stamped in gilt on spine. xci, 410 pp. + [2] pp. publisher’s ads. “Presentation copy” embossed on title page. “Sir F. Keeble, Hammels, Boars Hill, Oxford”, which indicates previous owner was Sir Frederick Keeble, the noted British botanist and professor. One of the most influential books in the history of evolutionary theory, this book was first published by Jean Baptiste Lamarck in Paris in 1809. It contravened Christian dogma about how plants and animals were divinely created in final fixed states and not transformed over time according to environmental factors. Lamarck also theorized that more complex forms of life derived from simpler ones. The 1809 first edition of this work is cited in Garrison-Morton 216 and was included in the Printing and the Mind of Man exhibition in 1963. Uncommon. No other copies listed for sale in the trade at this time. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
