About This Item

(New York): Bernard Geis, (1960). First Edition. Hardcover. Slight pulling at bottom of half-title page from text block. About Fine in a Near Fine pictorial slipcase. Illustrated with photographs. Truman's account of his experiences after leaving the White House. The scarcest of the three issues of this book, this is the Author's Edition bound in half brown leather and patterned paper boards with two gilt-lettered black labels on the spine and a larger label on the front cover noting this as the "Author's Edition." It is believed that only 100 copies were issued in this manner for use by Truman to give to families and friends, as opposed to the limitation of 1000 of the regular limited edition. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page: "To Hon. Harry Darby/from/Harry Truman/with kindest regards/and appreciation of his/friendship./Independence/Feb. 7, 1961."

Darby was a Republican national committeeman from Kansas from 1940 to 1964. He helped manage Gov. Alfred M. Landon's unsuccessful 1936 campaign for President. In 1948 he backed Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York and was one of the few Dewey advisers to suggest that a Republican victory over President Truman was not a sure thing. In 1950, he became a United States Senator to fill out the term of Senator Clyde M. Reed and played a key role in the choice of Dwight D. Eisenhower as the 1952 Republican candidate for President.
