About This Item
Leipzig: Ethnologisches Verlag, 1913. 1st German Edition. Original blue cloth, with gilt titles. Inner hinges cracked (still intact) splitting along the gutters at the spine, and wear to the corners; internally clean, text block is tight. Good. XV, 600pp. Text in German. Translation from the Englished Edition by F.S. Krauss and H. Ihm; Introduction by Sigmund Freud. Tipped-in portrait. Printed in an unspecified Limited Edition; this one is #343. Friedrich Solomon Krauss was one of the pioneers of sexology. He began in 1904 with the publication of his Anthropoyteia series, a continuation started under the name Kryptadia folklore collection. He published largely uncensored material and was thus an enemy of romanticism in folklore. In his "lecture on the introduction to psychoanalysis" Freud calls the anthropopyteia "an irreplaceable source work for everything concerning the sexual life of the people". Stern-Szana pg.91: "The original edition in English has been greatly expanded by Krauss." An impotant work, It is the first and to date the most comprehensive account of skatological customs. Highlights include: Zuñis urine dance, Fools festivals in Europe, Lunar memorials, primitive tribes, urine in human food, Sterkoranists, Greek bacchic orgies, use of poisonous mushrooms, connection between mushrooms and fairies, use of poisonous mushrooms among the Mexicans.
