1889. Very Good. 2 albumen prints. The first, Rouen--Fontaine de la Grosse Horloge, is 255 x 199 mm. on a cardboard mount (297 x 239 mm). Caption printed in photograph in lower right: "54. Rouen_Fontaine de la Grosse horloge." Written in ink at lower edge of image: "Rouen, August 25/89." Written in pencil next to photograph on mount: "Printed by the house of T. Herlyison." The fountain was designed by Jean-Pierre Defrance and built next to the famous Gros Horloge in 1743; the bas relief depicts the mythological scene of the river Alpheus and the nymph Arethusa, and Cupid flying above them. This photograph includes a man waiting for a bucket to fill at the fountain and a woman carrying a bucket and moving off to the right. The window to the right of the fountain says "Debit de la Fontaine." Simon Bamberger was a Utah entrepreneur who was the fourth Governor of the State of Utah and the first non-Mormon. He was involved in hotels, railroads and mining. In 1902 Bamberger acquired the gold mining properties in Delamar, Nevada. After sinking a new shaft completed in 1906, the mine closed in 1909. These photographs show the milling of timbers for the mine and are identified by handwritten notes on the back: "De Lamar, Nevada. Interior of Bamberger De Lamar Gold Mines Co.'s sawmill. Here all the timber is framed for the mine. The timber is used to support the earth above the timber." Copy #1 of twenty numbered copies, signed by the artist. Apart from the justification statement, a dark, functionally textless artist's book, featuring ghostly serigraphed images rendered doubly obscure by their appearance in the context of a long cascade of thin rectangular shapes blurred to the extent that they present a repetitive pattern almost like the appearance of laid bricks, all in somber blacks and grays. In an interview, the artist asserted that this work was a product of his mindset after his divorce.
